Pres. Rody Duterte reiterated his call for all government officials to get rid of foreign junkets resulting to some dismissal by some members of his Cabinet. In another controversial issue, a government official from Maritime Industry Authority was accused of excessive travel abroad.
According to a group of seafarers who claimed that Marina Administrator Marcial Amaro III, allegedly made 11 foreign trips just this year.
The United Filipino Seafarers (UFS) wants the Philippine Senate to investigate the "globe-trotting" Amaro, citing complaint made by the Alliance of Marina Employees (AME).
According to UFS President Nelson Ramirez the Marina administrator Amaro defied Pres. Rody Duterte's order to stop unnecessary junkets under the guise of official business.
In an interview with local media outlet, The Manila Times, the UFS Pres. Ramirez was quoted as saying "I am not surprised by these accusations. I have noticed this in the past. Every time he's needed for consultations, his staff said he was abroad for official trips. Are all these official junkets? Senate or Congress must intervene with this mess," Ramirez said.
Meanwhile, in an interview with ABS-CBN, Marina Administrator Amara denied that his foreign trips were junkets, as he noted that he personally needed to attend overseas meetings with maritime regulators.
The administrator bowed to resign if there was evidence that his trips were junkets. Even the aide of Amaro, Mon Cruz said that the Marina chief did of his privileges.
Travel junkets abroad is the main reason why the former Presidential Commission on the Urban Poor chief Terry Ridon and his commissioners were fired by Pres. Rody Duterte earlier this month. Once proven guilty, Amaro will follow the footsteps of Ridon and the other officials of the PCUP.
